Description
Iron(III) chloride hexahydrate is employed as a Lewis acid for catalyzing reactions and for colorimetric testing for phenols and their derivatives. It is used as a clarifying agent in wastewater and drinking water treatment. Other uses of Iron(III) chloride hexahydrate include chloride hydrometallurgy and for the detection of gamma-hydroxybutyric acids and and salicylic acids.
