Flammable and Explosion Proof Refrigerators

Flammable and Explosion Proof Refrigerators

Flammable and explosion-proof refrigerators meet NFPA and OSHA standards for safely storing volatile materials, such as solvents and intermediates, between 2°C and 8°C. The refrigerators prevent explosions inside or outside the unit and are available in a variety of models and sizes.

They are designed to eliminate the possibility of sparks igniting or initiating a conflagration or accidental detonation. Most have solid doors and must be “hard-wired” (not equipped with an electrical plug).

The refrigeration components of flammable materials and explosion-proof refrigerators are separated from any electrical components to prevent sparking:

  • Compressors typically have enclosed overloads, relays, and thermostats
  • Magnetic door gaskets help prevent hazardous fumes from escaping the chamber
  • Security measures may include locking doors and alarms

Other options may include:

  • Capacities: A range of sizes
  • Temperature recovery: The time required to return to the setpoint after the unit has been open
  • Peak variation: Temperature variability within the chamber; typically documented via temperature mapping
  • Back-up systems: For power failures or interruptions
  • Security: Locks or other restricted access features
  • Monitoring controls: Alarms and other methods to alert users of malfunctions, door ajar, events, and other issues
  • Noise Levels: Compatible with comfortable working conditions
  • Warranty terms
